Volunteering

We welcome volunteers of all types and ages to join OPEN THE BOOK and we feel sure you will enjoy every moment of it, but before you proceed with applying to join, here's what will be required of you.

You will be in a team formed from one or more local churches, which will present stories in school every week. The assembly takes only 10-15 minutes but allow a little extra time for rehearsing, planning and prayer.

There is no charge for registration but each volunteer is asked to purchase their own copies of The Lion Storyteller Bible and the OPEN THE BOOK books. The funding for this is sometimes provided by the church. (Please note: you don't have to buy the complete 3-year set of books - just the books relevant for that year's assemblies.)

It is essential that every member of the team is CRB checked through their own churches. This will need to be confirmed to the team leader and directly to the school if requested. Although OPEN THE BOOK is not responsible for this procedure, we strongly advise it because churches and schools will require this to be done, usually before you go into school.

OPEN THE BOOK is an ecumenical endeavour. Often teams are made up of volunteers from various local churches. Your local Churches Together may wish to be involved in this project. Why not contact them?

OPEN THE BOOK teams discover that being in a team builds relationships - not just with your fellow storytellers but also with the schools. The children will look forward to your visits and you will become a valued part of the school family. Also, there are many opportunities to build a relationship between the church and the school with special services, festival activities or supporting their R.E. curriculum.
